SUNDAY JANUARY 21st
Each week, a new topic is pulled randomly from the vessel of ideas on the altar in the center of the circle. Anyone can put any thought into the vessel, written on a slip of paper. And the end of each session, the topic for next week is discovered by the fingers reaching blindly into the jar. Last Sunday the discovery was:
IMPERMANENCE
If it's alive, it's changing. And everything is alive. Some things change slower than others. Some things change gently, and some things change with explosive fury. And every degree between.
I remember when I moved to New York City back in the day, I experienced a stupendous contraption of diversity, mystery, decay and blossoming newness. Kind of scary, but very exciting with a feeling of a kind of freedom that I liked.
I met a man who told me, "This town used to be so great, but now it's been ruined." I remember thinking, "I like it, I don't know what's wrong with this guy."
Then, decades later, the city now totally transformed, the creative mom and pop shops gone, the inventive joy replaced, I met somebody who was new to the town, I said "It used to be so great, but now it's been ruined."
At some point I realized that the city is alive, and so it changes. The more vibrant the livingness, the faster the change.
