SUNDAY JANUARY 21st
Each week, a new topic is pulled randomly from the vessel of ideas on the altar in the center of the circle. Anyone can put any thought into the vessel, written on a slip of paper. And the end of each session, the topic for next week is discovered by the fingers reaching blindly into the jar. Last Sunday the discovery was:
Situational Awareness
Situational awareness is noticing whats happening in the environment one is in, sensing the context, having some understanding of the meanings of relationships present, being able to anticipate what might happen next.
You've seen the phrase "reading the room". I think that might be about the same thing. Reading is finding meaning in something. So seeing what's in the room, feeling out the people generally, the kind of relationships present, what those people are expecting. Making sense of the general situation, and being able to know more or less what the response might be to something I might say or do, for example.
Is my awareness expanded enough to appreciate what's right in front of my nose? Am I missing something, or mis-reading? Sometimes I wonder, in our group here, if there are things happening that my situational awareness is just too dim or cloudy to pick up. If I share my thought, will it be received?
