GARUDA PURANA

​A Purana is a sacred text from ancient India, long trusted for the wisdom it contains. Puranas are a source of origin stories, teachings about creation and the structure of the universe, moral and spiritual lessons, rituals, significant genealogies, etc. 

The Garuda Purana is related to an Eagle-like being called Garuda who serves as the trusty steed of Vishnu, Lord Vishnu. And Lord Vishnu corresponds to the Source Field, Great Spirit, God, personified for teachability. The Garuda Purana is a teaching text framed as a dialogue between Vishnu and Garuda.

In these teachings that Vishnu gave to Garuda, we learn that:

- The body is born and dies, but you, your self (soul), continue as an immortal metaphysical being. Death is not an ending, it is a transition.

- Our actions, intentions, behaviors in life create effects, called Karma, that persist until resolved in some future lifetime of choices.  After death, you (soul) undergo consequences shaped by your Karma.  Truthfulness, compassion, self-control, generosity lead to beneficial consequences, whereas cruelty, greed, deceit, selfishness lead to suffering in your future lives.

- This human life is precious. All actions have consequences, and so life should be used wisely, to grow in virtue, understanding, devotion and alignment with Truth.

- Liberation from the cycle of life and death of the body is higher than Heaven. This ultimate freedom is called MOKSHA.
